Historic Gun House Doors Restored

A piece of Marblehead's not-so-distant past was recently restored on Elm Street.

The following information was provided by Historical Commission Chairman Chris Johnston:

The Marblehead Historical Commission recently announced the completion of a project to restore the doors, vent and gutters on The Gun House on Elm Street.

This project was funded by a grant from the Harold B. and Elizabeth L. Shattuck Memorial Fund, for which the National Grand Bank is Trustee.

The Gun House, located on Elm Street (formerly Back Street) across from the Gerry School, was authorized to be built in 1808 and was likely constructed by 1810 to store guns and artillery for the defense of the town in the War of 1812.

The restoration was based upon an 1882 photograph of the Gun House from the Commission’s collection, showing the structure’s original doors and vent. The doors and vent are nearly exact replicas of the originals, and use the original hinges and other original hardware.
