Ice Cream for Breakfast Day to Benefit Scholarships in Memory of Slain Teacher
Saturday, Feb. 1 is National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day at Cherry Farm Creamery. Half of the proceeds will be donated to scholarships in memory of Colleen Ritzer.
This weekend, when you celebrate National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day, and grab a scoop of that maple bacon ice cream or a Pop-Tart Sundae at Cherry Farm Creamery, you'll be supporting a good cause at the same time.
Tom Jones, whose family owns the Conant Street shop, says half the proceeds from the morning's sales will be donated to the Colleen Ritzer Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The fund is in memory of slain Danvers High teacher and Andover resident Colleen Ritzer. Jones said many of the shop's employees had Ritzer as their math teacher.
This is the fifth year Cherry Farm Creamery has invited customers down for special breakfast-themed treats on the first Saturday in February and each year proceeds from the event go toward a local cause or project.
An announcement for the event includes a quote attributed to Ritzer that has become emblematic of the influence she had on her students and those who knew her: "No matter what happens in life, be good to people. Being good to people is a wonderful legacy to leave behind."
Among the special breakfast offerings on the menu Saturday are:
- Waffle Sundaes
- Pop-Tart Sundaes
- "Coffee & Donuts" Ice Cream
- Maple bacon ice cream
- Warm maple syrup sauce
- Warm blueberry topping
- Bacon bit topping
- Sorbet/Sherbet fruit cup
Breakfast hours at Cherry Farm Creamery will be 8 a.m. - noon. The shop is located at 210 Conant St. and the regular menu will also be available. Stop by early.
The scholarship fund, which is managed by the Essex County Community Foundation, was established by Ritzer's family in the days after her death and will be awarded to a student pursuing a college degree in education.
