Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt Opens Friday

Here's a look inside Marblehead's new Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt on Atlantic Avenue.

Marblehead's new Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt on Atlantic Avenue is expected to open for business on Friday.

Owner Michael Hennessy was hard at work Monday afternoon, putting the finishing touches on the frozen yogurt chain's newest location - which will offer local residents the chance to mix and match their favorite frozen yogurt flavors and choose from a wide variety of toppings.

The idea, Hennessy said, is to provide local residents with a place to hang out, relax and satisfy their urges for something sweet.

"Everyone has been really great so far," Hennessy said. "We have a meeting with the building inspector this week and if all goes to plan we should be open on Friday."

Orange Leaf is unlike other frozen yogurt locations in that customers are asked to "weigh and pay" at the cash register.

After picking the size of their dish, cup or bowl, customers make their way to the shop's 14 flavor stations, fill their yogurt container with whichever flavor combination they desire and add their own toppings.

"We have the flavors arranged next to the ones that they go best with," Hennessy said Monday afternoon, adding that "some people go ahead and mix them all together."

So who will be working at the 1,200-square-foot space next to when it opens? Hennessy said local residents can expect to see some familiar faces when they walk in for their first taste.

"All the way down from assistant manager we've hired either students or kids who have recently graduated," Hennessy said. "It's all local kids."

The Atlantic Avenue location will be the frozen yogurt chain's third to open in Massachusetts. There are already Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt shops open in Andover and Salem and additional locations are expected to open soon in Belmont, Lexington, Melrose, Newburyport, Newton, Reading, Seekonk and Westford, according to the company's website.

The frozen yogurt store will have some competition nearby - it is opening less than 100 yards from where is expected to reopen later this summer.

Frozen Yogurt Flavors: Peanut Butter, Coffee, Pomegranate, Classic Tart, Brownie Batter, Cookies & Cream, Raspberry, Green Apple, Strawberry, Wedding Cake, Coconut, Pineapple, Vanilla, Chocolate.

Toppings: Almonds, Walnuts, Capn' Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, Coconut, Granola, Sprinkes, Sour Worms, White Choco Chip, Gummy Worms, Sno Caps, Butterfinger, Heath Bar, Choco Chip, M&Ms, Oreos, Chocolate Covered Pretzels.

agree with picking out your own flavor of yogurt, BUT also definitly should put on own toppings. Only the customer knows what topping they want and how much of that topping. Since you pay by the pound.
