Where Would You Put the Warwick Theater Marquee?

Ever since we announced that Warwick Place's facade would feature a new movie marquee, we've received dozens of email inquiries about the future of the original sign. Here's an update.

At a meeting in October, the Board of Selectmen unanimously approved a request for an overhanging movie sign at Warwick Place that is expected to be a larger replica of the original Warwick Theater marquee.

When the original marquee was taken down and preserved prior to the demolition of The Warwick in the summer of 2011, those planning the project said they were unsure whether they would refurbish the original or just replace it all-together.

On Monday afternoon, Groom Construction Co. co-owner David Groom said the plan to reintroduce the old Warwick marquee to the building was scrapped due to its poor condition.

The original, he said, is safe and sound in storage.

Now that we know architechts will be moving ahead with a plan to attach a replica to the new , which is expected to feature a combination high-end restaurant and movie theater, we want to know - what do you think should happen to the original?

Here are some of the suggestions we've received:

  • Add it to the Antique Sign Museum in the basement of Abbot Hall.
  • Use it as a community bulletin board or at a local school.
  • Refurbish it and mount it nearby on Pleasant Street.
  • Sell it for charity.

What do you think should become of the original marquee? Let us know in the comments section below.

Option 2 sounds good. You still want to know and see a piece of Marblehead's History.

Good heavens! One marquee or replica is surely enough. Give it back to Tom McNulty, if it won't go back on the building.

Tie it to the back of a boat. Go about two miles out to sea and cut the rope.
