This Week in Marblehead History: 1976

Owner of Book Store Buys Rechabite Building

The three-story red brick Rechabite Building at the corner of Pleasant and School streets has been purchased by Robert W. Hugo, owner of the Spirit of '76 Book Store, which has been housed on the street level of the structure since 1969. The building was purchased by Hugo, 33, of 10 Spring St., Marblehead, for an undisclosed amount from the Neptune Building Association.

16 Articles at Special Town Meeting

Approval of 16 articles in a special town warrant will be sought by local officials and private article sponsors at a special town meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 26. The meeting will be held in the high school auditorium and liveliest debate is expected on the last three articles in the warrant. All three citizen-soponsored articles are related to ending Marblehead membership in the South Essex Sewerage District.

Police Log Items

• A recording of the Eagles' Greatest Hits was lost by a Ballast Lane resident at Devereux Beach Saturday night, police said.
• Grass thieves cut away a 15 by 1 foot patch of lawn from the grounds of an Atlantic Avenue resident, police said.
• Two Clifton residents complained of a "large group of kids" at Greystone and Coolidge roads who were "racing cars, using profane language and screaming."
• Police notified the family of Elaine M. Campbell of East Boston that her yellow Camaro had been found in Redds Pond.

Learn the Metric System

Want to learn more about the metric system? It's coming pretty soon and you ought to be more conversant with it. Tower School, 61 West Shore Drive, is offering its "metrics for adults" course for the fourth straight year.
