"Supercells" on Tuesday afternoon and evening may produce wind damage and hail, according to the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center.

There is a possibility for severe storms with damaging winds and hail across southern New England on Tuesday afternoon and evening, including in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and southern New Hampshire.

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center said at 1 p.m. that storms “should develop across New England over the next few hours” and there is a 60 percent chance that severe thunderstorm watches or warnings may be issued.

The development of “supercells” will be possible on Tuesday “as instability increases over the next few hours,” the Storm Prediction Center said.
