Local Rotary Clubs Looking for Volunteers for Beach Clean-Up

The local Rotary Clubs are hoping to enlist local residents for their annual beach clean-up.

The following press release was submitted by Chairman of the Rotary Club's PR Committee, Tanya S. DeGenova:

The Marblehead Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor are seeking volunteers to clean up our beaches, Saturday, Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

For more than 20 years, Massachusetts volunteers have scoured beaches, river banks, marshes, and the seafloor to pick up trash and record information about types of trash being collected.

These volunteers are part of COASTSWEEP, the Commonwealth's annual coastal cleanup program, organized by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management and the Urban Harbors Institute of the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

Each year more than 2000 COASTSWEEP volunteers collected several tons of trash from beaches, marshes, rivers, ponds and the seafloor.

This year, volunteers in Marblehead will be participating in a COASTSWEEP cleanup at Devereux Beach on Saturday, October 20th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. (rain or shine).  This effort is sponsored by the two local Rotary clubs.
In an effort to  make our cleanup more "green", we would encourage volunteers to bring their own gardening gloves, reusable water bottles, buckets or reusable bags to use to collect trash.  Organizers will have trash bags & disposable gloves for those who need them.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Marblehead Rotary Club President, Chuck Bachner at 781-635-7994 or by emailing him at: cbachner@sleeinsurance.com
