Marblehead Museum to Celebrate the Chase and Rescue of the USS Constitution

Marblehead residents are ready to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the rescue of the USS Constitution.

The Marblehead Museum is inviting local residents to come together this Thursday, April 3rd, to celebrate the chase and rescue of the USS Constitution on its 200th Anniversary.

The following was posted on the Marblehead Museum website

On April 3, 1814 , Marbleheaders watched a dramatic display of seamanship unfold before their eyes.

The Constitution, a naval vessel that had already earned itself the nickname “Old Ironsides” when cannon shot bounced off her hull, was being chased by two British frigates, Tenedos and Junon.

They had Constitution on the run, but she was moving fast, dumping provisions and trying to get away. As the British gained on her, she needed a place to hide and regroup if she was ever to have a chance. She miraculously maneuvered into Marblehead Harbor and was saved!

The Marblehead Museum is proud to offer this educational opportunity free of charge, and invites everyone to attend the lecture, and the reception that will follow. The Civil War Museum & G.A.R. will also be open after the program.
