Marblehead Farmers Market Opens Saturday, May 31

Will you be heading down to the Marblehead Farmers Market this weekend?

The 17th season of the Marblehead Farmers Market will open Saturday May 31 at 9 a.m.

This year they are opening two weeks earlier than usual at the request of many of the farmers.  Fresh produce expected to be available is spinach, mesclun mix, lettuce, green onions, radishes and limited asparagus.  Produce farms will also have herb, flower and vegetable plants.  Meat & cheese farms will have their normal fare.

Farms will be: Baer’s Best Beans (dried beans), Cider Hill (fruits, vegetables, eggs, baked goods), Clark Farm (vegetables), Crystal Brook Farm, (goat & cow cheeses). Folsom Sugar House (maple syrup & candy), Gibney Gardens (vegetables), The HERB FARMacy (culinary & medicinal herbs), Maitland Mountain Farm (vegetables), Middle Earth Farm (vegetables & mushrooms), Open Meadow Farm (beef, pork, chicken, lamb, vegetables), Valicenti Organico (pastas & red gravies), Wolf Meadow (mozzarella & ricotta).  Three of the fifteen farms will start later: Flats Mentor (Asian vegetables), Grant Family Farm (vegetables, eggs, NEW THIS YEAR), and Beyond Seasons Farm (vegetables, only in November)

The food vendors will be reviewed next week.  But potential attendees should note that two of the three bakers are not scheduled to start until the normal opening date: June 14.  Cider Hill’s bakery products will be available.  Also there is one new food vendor: Rowands Seafood.

Tom the knife, scissors and tool sharpener will be in residence this week and then approximately monthly.

Marblehead Bank will host the Community guest tent with the premier showing of their new, reusable bag with the Farmers’ Market as the theme – one per person, please!  In following weeks they will be available for a nominal price.  Attendees are reminded that town meeting voted to eliminate plastic bags starting next May.  The new FM bags are an incentive to start getting used to reusable bags now.

Several people and organizations have donated services to help us get going.  In addition to Marblehead Bank, Nilsson & Siden Associates donates the site map (see bulletin board or web site) and the following local artists have painted our new sandwich board signs: Patti Williams, Barbara Naeser, and Molly Gerson.

Craft Vendors will be Patti Baker with Nantucket Baskets, Kittridge Candles, Julie Spinella with mermaid t-shirts, Angela Cook with pottery, Stephanie Peace with art made from woven ropes, Erin Nelson with dog collars, and jewelers Gail Koontz, Sonia Morris, and Marcia Herson.  All crafts are made by the seller him or herself.

The performer will be harpist Pam Roberts.  It was Pam’s idea to have performers at the market and she was the first one.  She’s also now the chair person of the Recycling Committee and would be glad to talk about recycling during breaks.

The set up and tear down crew will be Charles Gessner, Dave Hostetter, Steve Fowler and Jennifer, Yasen and Elian Colon.

The Marblehead Farmers’ Market takes place from 9am-noon on Saturdays from May 31 to November 23 behind the Marblehead Veterans’ Middle School (accessed via Vine St), rain or shine.  For more information seewww.marbleheadfm.com or call Don at 781 631-1243.
