Lobster Boat Sinks in Marblehead Harbor

The boat was hauled out of the harbor on Monday afternoon.

A moored 22-foot lobster boat weighted down by ice and snow sank in Marblehead Harbor on Saturday morning and was towed to Riverhead Beach on Monday.

A Harbor Avenue resident called police dispatch Saturday morning at 11, reporting that the white boat was sinking. Police contacted the town harbormaster.

Marblehead Harbormaster Webb Russell said on Monday that the owner of the boat, Stepping Stone, was offshore lobstering at the time of the moored boat's sinking.

Snow and ice caused the vessel to submerge, he said. It remained in an upright position, which made it easier to remove on Monday, the harbormaster said.

The boat sank to the bottom of the harbor but was visible at low tide, the harbormaster said.

He said he has not heard of or seen any indication of an environmental hazard as result of the sinking.

Marblehead Marine Construction towed the boat to Riverhead Beach where it is being held on a staging mooring.

The plan is to move the boat to a storage area on Tuesday, the harbormaster said.
