1 of 16,000: Marblehead Student Advances in National Merit Program

Noteworthies in Marblehead today, Oct 4.

1. School Notes:
Superintendent Maryann Perry told School Committee members Thursday that Marblehead High student Jacob Beck advanced as a semi-finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. 
That distinction places him among 16,000 of the estimated 1.5 million students who entered the program. Semifinalists are the highest scoring entrants in each state, according to the National Merit website. 
Marblehead school officials recognized his accomplishment and wished him well as he seeks to become a finalist in the program.
Jacob will find out in February if he qualifies as a finalist. About half of the finalists are selected to receive $2,500 merit scholarships.

4: Town Notes: 
The town website reports that curbside collection of leaves will take place on your regular scheduled trash and recycling days on the following weeks:
The week of October 21 st.
The week of October 28 th.
The week of November 4th. 
The week of November 12th (Tues-Sat)
The week of December 9th.
The week of December 16th. (Last Week)
No plastic bags will be collected or emptied. This is a leaves-only collection. Bags or barrels containing brush or other material will not be collected. This type of material affects the quality of the compost generated from leaves.Planning in advance for this service is difficult as its timing and success depend on the cooperation of Mother Nature and weather conditions.

5. Classic Car Notes:
Sunday, Oct. 6th from 10-2 pm is the 3rd Annual Classic By The Sea Car Show sponsored by the Swampscott Recreation Department from 10AM to 2PM on Monument Avenue. About 150 cars are expected from early 20th century models to the big fendered 50s, muscle 60s and swanly models from throughout ....for more information please contact the Recreation Department @ 781-596-8854
