SHEILA FARREN BILLINGS EXHIBITS
“NEW ENGLAND SCENES”
AT STETSON GALLERY IN NOVEMBER
Artist, teacher, and author Sheila Farren Billings of Salem will exhibit a selection of her work, “New England Scenes” in the Stetson Art Gallery of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead throughout the month of November. Sheila Billings will hold her opening reception on Sunday, November 11 from Noon-2 p.m. at the church, located at 28 Mugford St., Marblehead. She will also hold an informal “meet-the-artist” availability in the gallery on Sunday, Nov. 4 from noon-2 p.m.
While Sheila Billings’s formal training in art came at Salem State College, she was raised in a family of artists, with “works-in-progress” strewn throughout her home as an inspiration to creativity. Her work, which spans many mediums, reflects her upbeat attitude, with its straightforward style and true colors.
Sheila Billings is a member of the Society of Book Writers and Illustrators, and has written, illustrated, and collaborated on several books. She is also an educator who has taught in Salem and Beverly. She now works from her home studio in Salem.
“New England Scenes” is a collection of work inspired by the beauty of New England. Paintings were created both on location and from photographs, and include ocean scenes, historic buildings, gardens, and quaint neighborhoods. While the acrylic and watercolor paintings on exhibit are realistic, others are more whimsical and employ a variety of media. More About Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead
Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead began over 280 years ago, when the congregation split from the First Congregational Church, now called "Old North Church." The split happened because Old North selected the more conservative of two candidates being considered for settled minister.
A group of parishioners, who favored the more liberal pastor Rev. Edward Holyoke, invited him to lead a new church across town. Thus was born the Second Congregational Church of Marblehead, which joined the Unitarian movement in 1820 under the auspices of Reverend John Bartlett, who served from 1811 until he died in 1849.
Today, the church offers youth and adult education, and also hosts the me & thee coffeehouse on Friday nights.
