DESCRIPTION:The August exhibits at the Marblehead Arts Association (MAA) 
 highlights maritime art in conjunction with the Maritime Festival taking
  place from August 3-12th.&nbsp\;\nThe MAA exhibits run from August 4-29
 th with an openingreception on Sunday\, August 5th from 2-4pm.&nbsp\; Du
 ring the Maritime Festival the MAA will beexhibiting a very special post
 er designed by Martha Quigley\, which was inspired by a relatively unkno
 wn magazine illustration byEdward Hopper dating from 1924. Quigley creat
 ed this piece to invoke a sense of history and nostalgia while celebrati
 ng our Maritime heritage. A limited editionof 100 16&rdquo\; x 20&rdquo\
 ; signed and numbered fine art reproductions will be availablefor purcha
 se at the MAA.\nThe MAA will feature exciting yachting race photography 
 by award winning photographers\, Craig Davis\, Leighton O&rsquo\;Connor 
 and Peter Morris. Maritime fineart offers the work of Racket Shreve\, Ch
 arles Allen\, Kathleen Staab\, Phil Cusumano\, Ron Harrison and Martha Q
 uigley.&nbsp\;Also being exhibited is a show of large format photography
  titled &ldquo\;Atthe Ocean&rsquo\;s Edge&rdquo\; by Fran Gardino.\nThe 
 MAA is also pleased to present an exhibit of W. Starling Burgess. Born i
 n 1878\, Burgess was a yacht designer\, aviation pioneer\, and naval arc
 hitect.In 1905 he established a yacht yard in Marblehead\, Massachusetts
  and began designing and building yachts and boats.&nbsp\; In 1908 he be
 came interested in aviation andin 1910 he formed the Burgess Company and
  by 1915\, with 800 employees was thelargest employer in Marblehead.&nbs
 p\;&nbsp\; At somepoint in this decade\, Burgess designed what was almos
 t certainly his mostpopular boat\, the 14-foot "Brutal Beast." Simple en
 ough forinexpensive mass-production\, the Beasts became the dominant ins
 tructional craftof Marblehead&mdash\;and other communities&mdash\;into t
 he forties.
