For the second year in a row, youth baseball players from Marblehead were crowned the champions of the Gallant Memorial Baseball Tournament Tuesday night. Marblehead's 12's team, led by manager Tom Brant, defeated players from Peabody 10-7 at Forest River Park in Salem, tournament organizer Ray Cruddas confirmed late Tuesday night. Marblehead Little Leaguers exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh to beat Lynn in the opening game of the annual Gallant Tourney in Salem on Thursday. The team coupled aggressive baserunning with timely hitting to break the 3-3 tie in the final frame. Highlights included hard hits by Stephen Pappas and Thomas Brant and an NFL-worthy sidestep by Ben McCarthy at home plate. The following information was provided by Dan Brothers: The Marblehead 13 Year Old Babe Ruth team won the District 1 Championship Friday night 7-4 in extra innings, over a very tough Lynn team in Danvers at Twi Field. Marblehead entered the game after defeating Saugus 13-0 in the District Semifinals. It marked the 2nd time that the two teams met during the tournament, the first, a slugfest 20-15 win by Lynn in pool play. To qualify for the trophy round, Marblehead pulled out a clutch come from behind win against Andover on Wednesday night behind a strong pitching performance by Kyle Saulnier, and defeated an enthusiastic Sudbury team on Thursday evening to clinch a spot in the Trophy Weekend. The following information was provided by David Rowe: The Vikings Baseball team, a select AAU program based at Salem State University and featuring six Marblehead players, reached the championship game of the New England AAU 14-year-old open division tournament, played in Cranston, RI on July 15.  To enter the playoff round, the Vikings compiled a 12-2 divisional record during regular season play between April – June, and began the tournament as the 9th seed.  In pool play July 7 & 8 they won all three games, thus punching their ticket to the “Final Four”. The boys were simply unbeatable, going 15-0 and outscoring their opponents 176 to 29. Coaches attributed the team's dominance to a combination of stellar pitching, power hitting, and rock solid defense. With a berth in the state playoffs on the line, the Marblehead 13 year-old baseball All-Stars saw their Cinderella run in the post-season end with an 8-6 loss to Danvers Monday night at Clancy Field in Lynn. Marblehead entered last night’s game with one loss, dropping an earlier game to Danvers 4-3. The following release was issued by Marblehead Youth Baseball: Local children are invited to head down to Gatchell Playground this summer and play some pick up baseball. The games will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays from  5:30 - 7 p.m. from July 5 to Aug. 4. They will take place on Gatchells A, AA and AAA fields. Invited to join in are local boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 12. The games will be divided into: Never played, Clinic, Single A, Double A, Triple A or Majors. The following article was provided by Marblehead Youth Baseball: The 2011 AAA Championship Game featured the Rockies and Pirates. The teams' respective starting pitchers Adam Sherf and Jacob Bornstein kept the game scoreless through the first two innings. Bornstein struck out four of the first eight Rockies batters, including two strikeouts in the 2nd inning which left Rockies runners stranded at second and third base.  Sherf was aided by a nice catch by center fielder, Paul Heffernan on a well hit ball by Bornstein to end the 1st inning.
