Just a short drive north along the coast, Gloucester is a small fishing town brimming with beautiful views.  A good place to begin your adventures is the visitor's center. Volunteers there can point you in the right direction.  According to volunteer Rosie Sagall, one of the most popular activities is whale-watching. She said they guarantee you will see whales on your expedition.  Want to relax by the water? Check out Pavilion Beach. According to locals, it's the only beach with free parking.  "It's quiet and peaceful," said Winifred White, a Gloucester resident for 63 years.  White makes her…

One step in the door and you feel an immediate sense of tranquility. Soft whites and natural tones surround you, highlighted by the splashes of color from the variety of products that are on display. Shabby chic has always been the theme at La Belle Femme, but at the new location on Pleasant Street, it seems as though it has matured. Celebrating 10 years of business, it has evolved into a "beachy chic" atmosphere. Reclaimed pillars and table tops make up the the very neat and clean manicure tables. The next room features a decadent pedicure "throne" that looks plush and welcoming. The …
Mis-Chris Studio at 1 Water Street in Old Town was once the home and workshop of Captain Charlton Smith in the late 1800's. It is a shanty-like structure in which Smith designed and custom built the "Brutal Beast," a 14' long teak sailboat that featured a 6' beam. Hundreds of these boats were built here and the original double doors still remain that Smith used to lower the finished product down for delivery. The Mystic Maritime Museum in Mystic, CT has a "Brutal Beast" on display. In the early 1900's, the front part of the buliding was added by taking a laundry room from a Neck residence and…
Looking out onto the water these days, we are seeing more and more of this latest craze called "SUP" or "Stand Up Paddling." A long surf board, one long paddle and a life vest is all you need to have fun while cruising along the coast of Marblehead. SUP Kids offers programs for paddlers 6 to11 and 12 to 18 years old, beginner to advanced. They offer a 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4p.m. time slots. Kids learn by starting on the knees to get a feel for the board, handling the paddle and before you know it, they are standing and ready to go. "At the end of the week, we do a Survivor Style SUP paddle …

Marblehead is home to a host of historic locations that could be considered "hidden gems," but we thought the Sun Circle at Preston Beach contributes to making Marblehead a one-of-a-kind community. When it was time to forget a trying winter and welcome this year's first sunrise of the spring season, Marblehead Patch made our way to a ceremony at the ring of monoliths that attracted a large crowd of local early-birds. Then, when the time came to usher in the first sunrise of summer, Marblehead Patch found that the pathways criss-crossing the dunes surrounding the Sun Circle had been restored …
