About this column:

Each week, Marblehead Patch will feature a different athlete making strides for their team.
Marblehead High School senior Nolan Raimo is a busy guy, both on and off the track. Although he is preparing to attend Williams College next year, his focus, for now, is on the Magicians' indoor track season. Raimo won Northeastern Conference MVP last spring and qualified for New England's in spring track for long jump. After losing his father, Charlie, to colon cancer in 2009, Raimo began running to raise money for Mass General Hospital's Cancer clinic.  "The fundraiser was Running for the Cure and I had people pledge money based on my performance," Raimo said. "So far, I've raised something…
Marblehead High School junior Tyler Phillips is always getting ready for the next sports season, whether it be lacrosse, swimming or field hockey. In addition to being named the Marblehead Patch Athlete of the Week this week, Tyler will turn 17 tomorrow on New Year’s Eve. This year's field hockey team had some big moments, including head coach Linda Collins’ 200th win and a big 1-0 win over rival Danvers at Seaside Park, with Phillips scoring the only goal of the game. Tyler is the two-time defending NEC diving champ, and swims the 200 Relay and the 50 Freestyle for the Magicians, who’ve …
Marblehead High School’s Carly Robb has a sport for each season. In this, her senior year, she was a member of the cross-country team, she'll spend the winter on the swim team and she has plans to be back on the lacrosse field in the spring. Robb, the captain of both the swim team and the girls’ lacrosse team, has already been accepted as a member of Bucknell University's Class of 2016. “It’s very exciting to have my college plans made,” Robb said. “I’ll miss Marblehead quite a bit next year, this is a great small town and I have so many friends at Marblehead High School, I’ve had a wonderful…
Marblehead High School junior Brian Hough is a busy young man. He volunteers many hours a week on community service projects, hits the courts at the tennis clubs to improve his game, works on art projects and is involved with several school organizations. “I’m a member of Best Buddies and Team Harmony, an organization that works to educate and prevent incidents of bullying and hazing in high schools,” Hough said. “I’m also involved with the National Art Society and the Interact Club, which works in conjunction with the Rotary Club on their programs.” Hough, 16, and his tennis teammates Tyler …
The rain and drizzle hit the field just as Wakefield ran out the clock in a 7-6 playoff win over Marblehead Tuesday night, ending senior John Perry’s football career at Marblehead High School. “Not the way I, or the team wanted it to end, it was tough, I’m pretty sore today. We were close, we just couldn’t hold them off,” Perry said Wednesday. Tuesday night’s game could be the last football game of Perry’s career. He’s weighing college options and may be heading to Western New England College, where he could play some ball, though he hopes to head to Northeastern University to study …
Marblehead High School senior Pat Casey hit his own personal “triple-crown” when he made the Northeastern Conference Cross-Country All-Star team this past fall. The 17-year-old had already made the NEC All-Star teams for the winter and spring season, and wanted to grab that third one to make the start of his last year at MHS something special. “It’s something I wanted to do, absolutely,” Casey said last week from the MHS field house. “I made one all-star team, and then another, so I really wanted to run my best this fall, help the team win, and make the all-star team too.” Casey was co-…
Marblehead High School senior James Wigglesworth is one of those people who just loves to run. The 17-year-old was a member of the high school cross-country team this past fall, and also runs track during the winter and spring seasons - though he may mix things up by switching from running to badminton this winter. “It’s just something I’d like to try, it seems interesting, I like a challenge and it looks like it would be fun,” Wigglesworth said. A sporting coincidence, the New England Junior Badminton Open is being held this weekend at Marblehead High School. “I did cross-country in the fall…
Marblehead High School junior Ian Maag is a busy young man. He plays quarterback and safety on the football team, was a member of the state championship hockey team last season, and will play lacrosse in the spring. How does he stay ready for all of those games and practices? “My friend Alex has a nice hot tub, so any time I can get in there and soak a bit, I do. It’s a great way to relax and get ready for the next game or practice,” Maag said. Playing three intense sports at MHS, injuries are always a concern, and Maag suffered a broken back on the football field and a broken collarbone …
Thursday’s weather was pretty lousy, but when it rains, Marblehead High School's star cross country runner Mary Kauffman enjoys getting out there and blasting her way through the raindrops. “Oh I love to run in the rain, it’ s really great, I think,” Kauffman said. “You’re battling the elements, it’s hard, it’s uncomfortable, you’ve really got to push yourself and work your way through it.” For Kauffman, the wetter and muddier the run, the better. “I know it’s kind of strange, but it’s great to get soaking wet and splattered with mud in a practice run or a race,” the senior said. Mary will be…
Marblehead High School senior Chris Pedersen serves as goalie on the varsity soccer team, throws the discus on the spring track team and performs with the MHS Theater Club in the winter during the Drama Fest competition. Recently, Chris has been trying his best to act like the varsity boys' soccer season hasn’t been incredibly frustrating. The 17-year-old is co-captain of the boys’ soccer team along with Danny Plunkett and Mike Brenan. The three captains have not been on the field together for one minute of play due to injuries - Brenan had knee surgery, Plunkett fractured his pelvis and …
Marblehead High School’s Gus Percy is sharing the duties at quarterback for coach Jimmy Rudloff’s club this fall with Ian Maag - and that’s just fine with him. Percy spent much of the 2010 season watching from the sidelines after tearing his labrum. He did get into a few games last fall at tight end, mostly to block, but quarterback Matt Perlow did throw a few passes his way last year. After missing the baseball season due to his surgery, Percy worked out all summer to get back on the field throwing passes for the Magicians, who sit at 3-2 with a week off before they take on Gloucester on Oct…
Marblehead High School senior Ellie Rousseau loves sports. She loves field hockey, she loves running, she loves to compete - but mostly she likes to stay busy. “I get so excited when we have a game, a meet or a practice,” Rousseau said. “I don’t really like to lift weights or work out on my own, but when I’m on a team I’m ready to work hard and get going.” The 17-year-old senior is co-captain of the field hockey team this fall, and said she has a great relationship with her coach, Linda Collins. “She’s been a very big influence on me, for sure, very supportive,” Ellie said. “I really think …
18-year-old Andrew Scholnick can’t pull himself away from the game of golf. The Marblehead High School senior is co-captain of the golf team, he caddies and works in the bag room at Tedesco Country Club, and his favorite movie is Caddyshack. Scholnick leads the Magicians this fall with fellow co-captain Pat Cormier, and has worked at Tedesco for more than eight years. Scholnick usually hits at the number one spot for Marblehead on match days. “I really enjoy golf, it’s a lifelong sport, you can play it forever. I don’t think my body could handle football at age 50,” Scholnick said. “My dad (…
Although Marblehead High School senior Mike Harper is focused on his duties as the co-captain of the cross-country team, he is looking forward to the upcoming hockey season and being the Magicians' number one goaltender. “I can’t wait,” Harper said. “I’m totally focused on running right now, but this hockey season is going to be great, we’re the defending champs and I’m looking to have a great season in net.” Harper has been running competitively since his freshman year and is sharing the captaincy this fall with Pat Duffy. Harper runs the 800 and the 4x400 in the spring, and has broken 20 …
Marblehead High School’s Paige Ferrucci is celebrating her 16th birthday next week and she hopes one of her presents will be making coach Tracy DeLuca’s varsity soccer team. Ferrucci played with the freshman team last fall and said she hopes her speed will land her a spot on varsity this season. Ferrucci was a standout runner on the school's spring track team last year and has plans to run indoor track this winter. Paige saw some action Tuesday afternoon when Marblehead beat Revere in a preseason scrimmage at Hopkins Field. As a 15-year-old last May, Ferrucci improved on her 800 and ran the …
The Marblehead High School soccer team will open up the 2011 season at practice this weekend and for senior co-captain Danny that means it is time to put last season behind him and focus on the future. “We had a really, really rough time last year,” Plunkett said. “We only won one game and it was tough to keep the team's morale up when the losses kept coming and coming.” The 17-year-old sweeper has played for the varsity team since his sophomore year and will share the role of captain this season with fellow seniors Mike Brenan and Chris Peterson. Plunkett loves soccer, but says his first …
There are two dates on Oliver Gregory's calendar that have been circled for months - Aug. 22 and Sept. 9. On Monday, Aug. 22, Marblehead High School's varsity football team will begin practices. Then, on Sept. 9, the boys will open up the regular season at home, under the lights, against the Pentucket Sachems. “I’m so excited to get going,” Gregory said. “Even though we played great against Swampscott on Thanksgiving last year, we lost, so we are absolutely ready to have a successful season this year.” Gregory, 17, a linebacker, picked off the first pass of his career in the Swampscott game, …
When football practice opens up later this month, 17-year-old Will Quigley will enter his senior season as co-captain of the 2011 Marblehead Magicians football squad. Quigley will share the role of captain this season with Oliver Gregory and Joel Katz. The team's football captains were announced in July. “It was pretty exciting to be named captain, that’s for sure,” Quigley said during an interview at his home on Coolidge Road. “Just an incredible honor really, so many people have helped me get where I am now, I’m so excited about the upcoming season. As a freshman, Quigley’s team went …
13-year-old Kaylyn Countie is itching to get back on the field. Countie pitches for the U-14 softball Magicians and is heading off to Top Gun Softball Camp at Bishop Fenwick before entering the eighth grade at Veterans Middle School on Sept. 6. “I’ve been pitching since I was eight, I started playing baseball, following after my older brother Matt, but I switched to softball, and I’ve always been pitching since I started playing,” Countie said. “I lost my first game, I was a little wild, it took a while, but I got the hang of it,” Countie said. Kaylyn now has three pitches in her arsenal, a …
Marblehead High School’s Michaela LeBlanc is excited to start up her sophomore year in a few weeks and get back on defense for the Junior Varsity soccer team - but if you were to ask her, she'd tell you her mind is really focused on the 2012 softball season. As a freshman, Leblanc backed up star pitcher Sarah Hastings on the mound, picking up several saves and a few wins for coach Johnny Gold’s 2011 club. “We had a good season,” LeBlanc said. “We won two games in the playoffs and lost a tough one to Tewksbury.” The softball team entered the MIAA playoffs as the 17th seed and had to beat …
