Whole Foods Exec Says Capitalism Under Attack

John Mackey made the remarks while promoting his book, Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business, at a Boston Chamber event.

The author of a book about capitalism — who is also a Whole Foods Market executive — says business is under attack in the United States.

John Mackey, a co-chief executive for the high-end grocer, spoke to the Boston Chamber of Commerce last week, saying businesses are maligned, according to a Boston Globe business article.

“The latest Gallup poll shows big business enjoys only a 19 percent approval rating,” he told an audience at the Seaport World Trade Center. “Yet business is fundamentally good and has created more value in the world than any other institution.”

Mackey and Raj Sisodia are co-authors of the book “Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business.”

The book, $17.82 through Amazon, argues capitalism serves everyone involved in the exchange and the practice is inherently good and elevates mankind.

Whole Foods has 21 stores in Massachusetts, among them their Swampscott location on Paradise Road.

ig business acts like a magician. They wave capitalism and say look at this while they practice monopolyism. Capitalism is based on competition and big business oppose competition. Small businesses compete while big business monopolizes and destroys competition. That is why big business only profits the top few percent of the population.

Well said. If we had a strong union base - the workers would be able to share that instead of getting the shaft and higher taxes so the 1% can live like royalty.

"Business is fundamentally good"...that's an interesting viewpoint. Business is no more fundamentally good or bad than any other phenomenon. It all depends on what people do with it. It's a force, like electricity. You can use it to fry an egg or you can use it to randomly electrocute puppies. Business has a positive or negative effect on society depending on how it's practiced. The notion that there's anything inherently noble or heroic about it is grotesque.
