Where Are All of Marblehead's Liquor Licenses?
Wondering which local businesses have laid claim to Marblehead's liquor licenses? You're not the only one.
The hot topic at Wednesday's meeting of the Board of Selectmen will be a public hearing regarding Casa Corona's bid for Marblehead's first carry-in alcoholic beverage license.
Unable to secure a liquor license of their own, Casa Corona owners Jose and Felix Bracamontes are hoping that securing a BYOB license will translate to a boost in business at their Mexican restaurant on Smith Street.
Ever since the restaurant filed a request in September, board members have been hard at work, laying out the guidelines pertaining to local carry-in alcoholic beverage licenses.
They approved these local guidelines at a meeting last month.
During that time, we've received numerous requests from local residents who wanted to know which businesses in town have laid claim to the available liquor licenses.
It just so happens that Wednesday's board meeting will also feature the renewal of all of the town's licenses for 2013.
Board members have said that there are 20 full liquor licenses and five beer and wine licenses available in town. The number of licenses available to each municipality is based on population.
According to the posted agenda, these are the alcohol-related licenses up for renewal Wednesday night:

Can you also explain who actually "owns" the licenses and can the owners sell them? I am sure the public would like to know more about the "market" behind all of these licenses.

The archaic liquor laws of Massachusetts are enough to make head-slapping a state sport.
No beer on Sunday before noon? Well, I guess that will fill the pews.
A grocery chain can't own more than three stores that sell liquor? Le'ts keep that competition down.
In California you can buy beer and wine in any grocery store - and in spite of that state's high taxes, liquor is at least 10% cheaper than in Massahusetts. (But you can't buy it between 2AM and 6AM -- they draw the line somewhere.
And if you want to buy a six-pack in a gas station ?? No problem.
The idea that Casa Corona can't get a liquor license is a remnant from the 19th century, when drunkeness was indeed a great problem in Massachusetts.
Sure, alcohol's still a problem for some people (note the number of DUI's in the police reports), but not being able to drink a beer with a taco isn't a solution.

Why are public licenses, based on the town's population, given to private organizations that do not serve the public?
Why are public licenses 'owned by the current licensee' and then 'sold' when they close a business and not made available to an existing business on the waiting list?
