Terry's Reopening on Atlantic Avenue
Terry's Ice Cream Shop will be reopening this spring in the former home of Kaps Menswear on Atlantic Avenue.
Terry's Ice Cream Shop, which has been closed for more than eight months, will reopen this spring in the former home of Kaps Menswear on Atlantic Avenue.
Terry's owner Carlos Rocha said he was excited to reopen his ice cream parlor in the 1,300-square-foot space adjacent to Sweeney's Retreat and Shubie's Marketplace.
"I think it will be a great space for us," Rocha said Wednesday afternoon. "A lot of people come through that area and there is a lot of parking in the back."
Earlier this month, Barry Edelman, owner of 5 Corners Kitchen, announced that his restaurant would be expanding into the parlor's former home on School Street.
Both businesses were forced to close after an electrical fire in July left the building with severe smoke and water damage. Since that time the entire inside of the building has been gutted and work to rebuild the restaurant is now underway.
Rocha said his new space, which is set back from the street, will likely require a hanging sign facing Atlantic Avenue to draw in customers.
"We're working on getting a sign up now," Rocha said. "We hope to have at least something up in the window by the end of the week."
Rocha said customers looking forward to his grand reopening can expect a return to the 50's theme of "Terry's Old Fashioned Ice Cream Shop."
Marblehead Patch will be posting information about the reopening when Rocha has a date nailed down. Until then, Rocha said he will continue selling from his ice cream truck in the center of town.

I noticed Carlos mentioned Shubies and Sweeney's, but failed to take into account that Nugget's jewelry store is right on the other side. I think having dozens of kids running around in front of their establishment putting their sticky fingers all over the glass will, no doubt, have an adverse effect on their business. I hope Carlos will have some consideration for this long standing and well run Marblehead business.

Hi Mark: Carlos didn't mention Shubie's and Sweeney's, we just offered them as landmark references for people who couldn't picture where the new space would be.

I don't think Cafe Italia had any problem with "sticky-fingered" kids when Terry's was on School St.. And I have done business with Nuggets....a few fingerprints on a window would certainly not deter me from going there.
Good luck to Terry's at the new spot--and to all their neighboring businesses as well!

Mark, you are kidding, right? I suspect Nuggets is thrilled to have a new neighbor that will be generating a lot of year-round foot traffic. Kids aren't the only ones who eat ice cream, after all.
