Longtime Police Capt. to Retire
The Board of Selectmen unanimously approve the appointment of a temporary captain.
Marblehead Police Chief Robert Picariello appeared before the Board of Selectmen at Abbot Hall Wednesday night to announce the retirement of longtime police Capt. Mark Mills.
Picariello said he came before the board with "joy and sadness at the same time" and pointed out that Mills could have retired several years ago but decided to stay with the department.
"He has just decided that it is time to retire," Picariello said, adding, "he was an excellent, excellent captain."
Following the announcement, the Selectmen unanimously approved Picariello's request to appoint Lt. Matthew M. Freeman as temporary captain - effective July 1.
"Lt. Freeman is the senior lieutenant and is no doubt the right choice for this position," Picariello said. "He has always performed his duties with the best interest of the town in mind and his professionalism is unsurpassed."
