One day after a robbery at Bank of America shook Marblehead, the image of what happened on Pleasant Street Tuesday afternoon has gotten clearer. This morning, Police Chief Robert Picariello said the investigation into the robbery is ongoing and police officers are following up on leads provided by local residents.

Surveillance photos from the Marblehead robbery and one committed in North Reading on Saturday show that the clothing used in both robberies were identical.

Here is a step-by-step look at how the police responded to the robbery, according to information released by Picariello Wednesday morning.

At 2:33 p.m., police received a 911 call from Bank of America reporting a robbery. The caller offered a similar description to a suspect who had just attempted to rob a bank in Swampscott. The man was described as being a white man, about 6' 4" tall, with a 5 o'clock shadow. He was said to be wearing blue latex gloves and a blue bandanna over his face.

After checking the adjacent woods and all of the houses along the roadway, police received word that National Grand Bank had a white motor vehicle, matching the description of one used in the Swampscott robbery, speed through their parking lot around the same time police units were on their way to the Bank of America.

Police continued to receive word that a white older model four-door sedan was speeding through town, using one-ways in the wrong direction. One resident, who reported a vehicle speeding the wrong way down Raymond Road, said there were two people inside of the car.

In the minutes following the robbery, police looked at a car behind Cafe Italia with a white jacket and gray hooded sweatshirt containing a ripped $20 bill in the back seat, but that vehicle was later cleared from any involvement.

Police used K-9 units to search Steer Swamp after receiving a word that the suspect may have fled there. They also received word from a woman who said they saw a man without a shirt on, in his 20's, who was acting suspiciously. That report also checked out a short while later.

At 4:28 p.m., a woman said a man wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt in a white Rav4 asked her for directions out of town and she gave him the wrong directions and called police. That vehicle, she said, had a New Hampshire license plate.

By 4:36 p.m., police had called off the search in Steer Swamp and returned to canvassing the town for residents who may have seen something. At 4:50 p.m., the fire department had a man come in to report that he saw a man with blond hair and a beard, wearing a light sweatshirt, khaki pants and boots walking on Lafayette Street towards Salem.

Soon after, the owner of a local business said that he had a man come into his store to purchase a scooter at about 2:45 p.m. The man, who the owner said had a beard, was about 6 feet tall wearing a green sweatshirt, khaki pants and aviator glasses.
