The Marblehead 13 Year Old Babe Ruth team won the District 1 Championship Friday night 7-4 in extra innings, over a very tough Lynn team in Danvers at Twi Field.
Marblehead entered the game after defeating Saugus 13-0 in the District Semifinals.
It marked the 2nd time that the two teams met during the tournament, the first, a slugfest 20-15 win by Lynn in pool play.
The win gives Marblehead a berth into the Eastern Mass State Tournament, to be held in Lynn at the Bowser Complex at Breed Middle School on O'Callaghan Way this upcoming weekend 7/20 - 7/22.
Lynn will also advance into the tournament as the tournament host.
Friday night's game started off much slower than the first meeting between the two teams as pitching and defense highlighted terrific performances on both sides.
Marblehead starting Pitcher Crew Whittier, pitched 3 strong innings followed by Spencer Carr who added 4 great innings of his own.
By the 6th inning Marblehead was clinging to a 4-2 lead. Lynn added a run in the bottom half of the 6th to cut the lead to 1 run.
Marblehead failed to score in the top half of the 7th, and Lynn was able to drive home a run to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
The extra frames featured new pitchers for both sides, with Matt Koopman taking the hill for the Headers.
After a scoreless 8th, and Marblehead down to their final out in the 9th, Kyle Koopman was hit by a pitch and got the Headers rolling.
A single to right field by Tim Kalinowski moved Koopman into scoring position and brought Liam Tubridy to the plate.
Tubridy ripped a double into the right center field gap and scored both Koopman and Kalinowski.
Tubridy later scored on a wild pitch to make the score 7-4.
Matt Koopman set the Lynn team down in the bottom half of the 9th and the celebration was on.
