Marblehead Little Leaguers exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh to beat Lynn in the opening game of the annual Gallant Tourney in Salem on Thursday.

The team coupled aggressive baserunning with timely hitting to break the 3-3 tie in the final frame.

Highlights included hard hits by Stephen Pappas and Thomas Brant and an NFL-worthy sidestep by Ben McCarthy at home plate.

Ben eluded the Lynn catcher's tag at home to score a run and propel the rally.

Henry Billings threw 6 1/3 innings and was relieved by Mark Karass.

Marblehead next takes the field on Saturday at 4 pm against Swampscott.

Nice win but hardly the biggest win in years. Last year's team won it all and had to come from behind in the championship to take the gold.

The quote given was that this was the biggest win for THIS TEAM in the four years they have been playing together. Marblehead residents are well aware of the baseball accomplishments of last year's 12 year old team, and their continued success this season.

Just to set the record straight, I wish this year' s 12s continued success and truly hope they win it all as well. And by the way, I am not related in any way to any of the 13s

Seriously. You have to be an absolute tool to take umbrage and correct the record on what constitutes a great win. An article written for a 12 year old boys scrapbook doesn't take away from what last years team did or the team before that. It's a nice way to celebrate a moment in time for a group of kids - many of whom won't play past Babe Ruth. I'm sure the Header Dad and Marblehead Mom who set the record straight are living a little too vicariously through the lens of thier 13 year old kids. I'm surprised dad didn't reference his All-Star days. Probably played Soccer.

The Header dad must be uneducated or illiterate because the comment is "Tom Brant said the biggest win for HIS TEAM in 4 years. Not everything has to be about the 13's.
