Local Officers Named Asst. Habormasters

More than two dozen local police officers were appointed as Asst. Harbormasters by the Board of Selectmen last week.

The Marblehead Harbormaster will have some help upholding water safety regulations this summer thanks to members of the local police department.

At their meeting at Abbot Hall Wednesday night, the Board of Selectmen unanimously approved a request from Police Chief Robert Picariello and Harbormaster Webb Russell to appoint more than 20 officers as assistant harbormasters.

"In an effort to clarify boating law enforcement we respectfully request that the board appoint all duly sworn officers of the Marblehead Police Department as assistant harbormasters," the request read.

The request may have been prompted by recent reports of groups partying near Brown's Island.

At 3:58 p.m. on July 4, police responded to several complaints from town residents regarding a loud party near the island. Complainants said they worried about littering, excessive noise and the safety of revelers.

The 29 officers named at Wednesday's meeting will be assistant harbormasters through May 2013.

Great news! Doliber's Cove and the Brown's Island area used to be a great protected cove to swim, kayak, and walk out to the island. All these boaters have created almost a blockade, making it difficult to safely swim with families. You now have to watch out for intoxicated boaters, and stepping on beer cans and the numerous anchor chains creating a web across the sandbar.

They should ban all motorized boats from Browns Island. Not only because of all the litter caused by partying, but is is a real safety issue with all the kids swimming in the area. Drunk driving on water is just as bad as on land, and boats don't have breaks.
