Kid Friendly Fun: Stand Up Paddling

Take advantage of time with your kids and get out and enjoy these hot spots. Your Patch Passport gives you options for great local spots for kid-friendly fun.

Looking out onto the water these days, we are seeing more and more of this latest craze called "SUP" or "Stand Up Paddling." A long surf board, one long paddle and a life vest is all you need to have fun while cruising along the coast of Marblehead.

SUP Kids offers programs for paddlers 6 to11 and 12 to 18 years old, beginner to advanced. They offer a 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4p.m. time slots.

Kids learn by starting on the knees to get a feel for the board, handling the paddle and before you know it, they are standing and ready to go.

"At the end of the week, we do a Survivor Style SUP paddle where we set up 4 different challenges for the kids to accomplish and give out prizes at the end," said SUP East Coast Style co-owner Leah Goodman.

Patch witnessed some of these challenges and the kids were paddling through hoops, running to the beach for another game and back out on the board. The kids were all smiles and the group of about eight children were happy and eager to stay on the water.

They also include tie dying, beach crafts, relay races and obstacle courses on the boards.

Owners Christos Doudroudis and Goodman have brought this new sport to Marblehead this year. They also offer group and private lessons as well as tours that operate all year round.

"Come paddle with us," Goodman said enthusiastically.

They still have openings through the rest of the summer. Contact them for a fun and unique activity for your family to engage in.

They are located at Little Harbor Boathouse at 40 Doaks Lane in Marblehead. Call 978.882.2109 or 508.451.0573 to join them. You can also email them at supeastcoaststyle@gmail.com.
