Golf Team Comes Back to Defeat Salem

Marblehead High School's golf team used a great finish to pick up their second win of the year, beating Salem Monday afternoon at Tedesco Country Club.

's golf team came back from an early deficit Monday afternoon to beat Salem 40-32 at .

The final four Marblehead golfers, Trevor Jones, Eric Lundgren, Matt Scholnick and Sam White all won to clinch the victory for the Headers. Salem was in the lead early after Marblehead dropped three of the first four matches.

Marblehead’s number one Andrew Scholnick lost to Salem’s Tim Richmond Monday, putting the Magicians in an early hole.

“I was surprised we struggled so early,” Marblehead coach Jim Keating said. “We bounced back nicely as the matches went on, Pat (Cormier) won and our final four golfers won and we were able to win today.”

After Scholnick fell, Connor Green lost to Salem’s Kyle Gauthier and Pitch Riley lost to Salem’s Cameron Darmody before Marblehead’s co-captain Pat Cormier stopped the slide with a win over Matt Cocazella.

Marblehead improved to 2-2 on the young season with Monday’s win over Salem to go with an earlier victory over Gloucester. Marblehead fell to Danvers and Beverly.

“We played some good golf today and hopefully that will continue," Keating said.

Marblehead clinched the win Monday when Trevor Jones beat Will Parr, Eric Lundgren defeated Troy Gilbert, Matt Scholnick, the younger brother of co-captain Andrew Scholnick, beat Joey Malionek and Sam White beat Salem’s Dan Gauthier.

The Witches fell to 3-3 on the season with Monday’s loss. Salem has wins over Saugus, Revere and Gloucester, with losses to Winthrop and Danvers.

“He (Tim Richmond) played well,” Scholnick, who shot a 39, said. “I made some good shots today but didn’t make enough of them.”

“I was pleased with how I played today,” Pat Cormier, who shot a 40, said after the match. “It was good to win, but I know I can play better.”
