Fire Department Pitches In for Muscular Dystrophy

Marblehead firefighter Tim Doane appeared on the 46th annual MDA Labor Day Telethon Sunday to present funding raised by the department.

Local firefighter Tim Doane appeared on the 46th annual MDA Labor Day Telethon Sunday to present money raised by the department through a series of fundraisers.

The was recognized for supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association and contributing to the local Telethon. Doane presented $13,341 to MDA, which was raised through contributions from the 2011 Fill the Boot campaign and a .

Thousands of families in Massachusetts receive support from MDA’s largest fundraiser of the year. Telethon donations are used for advancing MDA research, support groups and medical clinics for MDA clients. There are seven MDA clinic locations in Eastern Massachusetts including Lahey Clinic Foundation Inc. in Burlington, UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester and Massachusetts General Hospital, Tufts Medical Center, Children’s Hospital and Brigham & Women’s Hospital, all in Boston.

Generous individual and corporate Telethon donations also help cover the cost of annual MDA summer camps, allowing youths with neuromuscular diseases to enjoy a week of camp at no charge to their families.

Nationwide, the 2010 MDA Labor Day Telethon raised $58,919,838 during the Labor Day weekend broadcast.
