Does Marblehead Need a Movie Theater?

You tell us - does Marblehead need a movie theater?

If you live in town, you've probably heard that the Warwick Theater Foundation is raising money to open a movie theater in the new 38,000-square-foot Warwick Place building on Pleasant Street.

Though it remains unclear whether or not the building will ultimately house a theater, we want to know - do you think Marblehead needs a movie theater?

Last month we asked 'Does Marblehead Need a Gas Station?' and stirred up quite the discussion among our readers.

Let us know how you feel about seeing the big screen return to Marblehead in the comments section below.

does marblehead need a dunkin donuts, walgreens, 7-11, or specialty grocery store? (all of which are in vinnin square, while youre filling your gas tank)... and how many bars/taverns do we have again? I think the important question is whether a theater is an establishment marblehead needs or one it wants, and from what i've heard it's both.

All you have to do is look around downtown to know we need this movie theater. Kids wander around aimlessly, which only leads to trouble; restaurants come and go because they can't sustain themselves; people take their business to the mall (UGH) since that is where their entertainment is. We need an anchor and the Warwick can be that if it is done right.

I think the question really is, can and will this town support a movie theater. As I look at all the empty storefronts I really wonder if it can long term... Don't get me wrong, I'm not against it. Having grown up here itwas wonderful having the Warwick, the bowling alley, the Y all right uptown... but things have changed so much over the past 50 years....

When we first moved to town we loved having the theater so accessible (reminded me of the town I grew up in), but I'm afraid Sheri has a point. Will the community commit to supporting a theater long-term? I sure hope so because I'd love to see one come back to MH!

If the people in town supported a theater, the Warwick never would have gone out of business in the first place. No, a waste of time and money. It will never fly.

Absolutely! Who wants to drive to Peabody to see a movie or worse yet, drive kids there and have to sit through a movie you have no interest in watching or waiting around until the movie is over! Build a new Warwick!!!!

Yes! Having a theatre right in town will make MHD a destination all year round, bringing more money to the town

We need a movie theater.
The Warwick did not go out of business because people did not support it.
It went out of business because it was not handicap accessible and did not have room for" handicap restrooms".
If they build it, people will come.

Absolutely YES!!! It would add to the artistic culture of the town, featuring not only newer movies, but perhaps silver screen movies, classics, a series of "inspirational movies." Perhaps a theme each night would be great, with discounts to seniors and students. And it would help the Marblehead economy in a myriad of ways. It would add to the "happiness" factor in in our town. Only good can come from bringing a theatre back to Marblehead.

Yes, as long as people will support it.

Yes, but that said we need to support it. The Warwick was a real part of growing up in Marblehead and enjoyed by all while we had it.
