Black and Blue Captains Prevail at Big Red Tourney
Other wrestling highlights included Maleek Newsome's first varsity victory.
Two Swampscott-Marblehead wrestlers won medals in the 2011 Tyngsboro Big Red Tournament. The team earned 56.5 points in the tournament and placed 11th overall in the 16-team tournament.
"I was very pleased with the way the co-captains Jeff (Sherman) and Jake (Powell) wrestled, they led their team by example," said Coach Mike Stamison.
Other bright spots were Maleek Newsome winning his first varsity match at 170 lbs by executing a text book bow-and-arrow cradle, twisting his opponent up and pinning him for the win, the coach said.
Powell, a Swampscott junior, won first place in the 113-pound weight class and Sherman, a Marblehead senior, took fourth place in the 126-pound weight class.
It was Powell's 50th high school wrestling victory. He won four matches, two wins by fall and one by a technical fall.
Powell defeated Steve Giampapa of Burlington in the championship match Powell. Sherman finished the day with a 3-2 record.
Newsome, meanwhile lost to Shahib Blount of Whittier Tech 5-4 in a match that he was winning until the final 10 seconds of the match.
Coach Stamison said Sean Taylor, while not placing, wrestled a good first match, but got a wake up call from a rival heavyweight from Hollis-Brookline (NH) whom he lost to by one point in overtime.
"I hope they all learned from what happened this weekend," the coach said.
"As for the others, we have a lot of work to do, and it's back to basics this week, and the coaching staff will also be running through arm bar defense, as well as better body positioning.
"We are well conditioned, but also have to be fundamentally sound, and that's what we are going to work on before the holiday break."
The Black and Blue have three events this week.
Tuesday at Triton, Wednesday at home vs. co-op Danvers/Ham-Wen and Friday at Lynnfield/North Reading for a tri meet than includes Malden Catholic.
