Obituary: Casper "Gap" Sahagian

  • Survived by: Children: Jann Wirtz of ME, Robyn Sahagian of CA, William Sahagian and wife Kimberley, and Jay Sahagian and wife Rebecca - all of Marblehead. Grandchildren: Jenneke, William, Lindsey, Michael, Carter and Catherine; great- grandchildren, William and Ava.

Casper "Gap" Sahagian, 85, of Marblehead died Thursday, Nov. 18. He was the husband of the late Gwendolyn (Barker) Sahagian. Born in Revere on April 10, 1925, he became a resident of Marblehead in 1963.

After graduating from Revere High School, Mr. Sahagian enlisted in the Army where he served in WWII and was proudly part of the Normandy invasion. After leaving the service, he began his career as a photo engraver at the Boston Herald American. In 1998, he became the proprietor of the Barnacle Restaurant in Marblehead. He was a member of the Winthrop Elks and the Beachmont V.F.W.

Mr. Sahagian would smoke his cigars while watching the horse races at Suffolk Downs. He enjoyed taking annual trips to Churchill Downs and Saratoga with his travel buddy, Jim. He also traveled to Bermuda and to the Caribbean with his family. He was a permanent fixture at Getchalls Pit and Seaside Park watching his children and grandchildren play ball in the spring and summer.

Visiting hours will be on Monday, Nov. 22 from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Eustis & Cornell Funeral Home in Marblehead.  A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 11 a.m. also at Eustis & Cornell. Following the service, burial with honors will occur at Waterside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans, 17 Court St. Boston, MA 02108.
